Ep 40: The Space Where Magic Happens (And Why We Avoid It)

Summer Series on Becoming - Episode 1
Episode Summary: What if that feeling of being "stuck" is actually your superpower? In this first episode of the Summer Series on Becoming, I share why I'm obsessed with liminal space - that in-between place where transformation happens. Drawing from my background as a choreographer and diving into the research behind rites of passage, I reveal how to navigate uncertainty as a pathway to your next level self.
What You'll Learn:
- Why being "stuck" is actually the most powerful space for transformation
- The 1909 anthropology research behind liminal space and rites of passage
- My choreographer's secret: why 3 weeks of "not knowing" created the most magical performances
- The three phases of any transformation (separation, transition, reincorporation)
- How to give yourself structure while staying in creative chaos
- Practical tools for navigating your own liminal space
- Why your brain wants to run back to the familiar (and how to work with it)
Key Quotes:
"I have a confession: I'm obsessed with being stuck. And after 10 years of transformation work, I think you should be too."
"You're neither here nor there. You're letting go of the old but you're not in the new just yet."
"If you don't allow that space of not knowing, you can't create something new. You're going to always go back to the old."
"You know you're in the right place when it feels chaotic, when it feels unknown, when it feels a little scary."
"We would create those magical moments that come from something bigger than yourself... If I would start with every scene planned out, it would be decent, but it wouldn't have that magic."
The Choreographer's Method:
- 8 weeks total rehearsal time
- 3 weeks pure exploration phase - no concrete structure, just creative discovery
- Structure within chaos - enough framework to hold the process
- Magic emerges from the unknown, not from pre-planned sequences
- Team creation - accessing collective intelligence beyond individual mind
Your Liminal Space Toolkit:
1. Set Time Boundaries:
- Give yourself a specific timeframe (Relinde is using the whole summer)
- Set an end date to make it safe for your brain to dive in
2. Create Sacred Time:
- Block 2-3 hours for pure exploration (Relinde protects her mornings)
- Allow yourself to "get lost" in research and discovery
- Permission to be "unproductive" in traditional terms
3. Work with Your Beliefs:
- Write down limiting beliefs that surface
- Notice when your brain wants to jump to concrete solutions too early
- Expect and welcome emotional chaos as part of the process
4. Find Your Support:
- Connect with like-minded people who understand the process
- Ask for space to work through things without needing immediate solutions
- Know that people who "have it all figured out" might not relate right now
The Three Phases of Transformation:
- Separation - letting go of old identity/beliefs/ways of being
- Transition (Liminal Space) - the in-between where you're neither old nor new
- Reincorporation - integrating back into the world with your new level

This Week's Homework: If you're in a liminal space right now, set your timeframe and sacred time blocks. Write down what beliefs are coming up that might be holding you back from your new vision. Remember: chaos and confusion mean you're in the right place.
